Our History

In the past, almost every program at Hogeschool Zeeland had its own student association. For example, all economics programs were represented within Cineadus, the PABO (teacher training college) students were part of ’t Vloei, and ‘Mirfisto’ took care of the maritime academy. The student life was so vibrant that most associations even had their own sub-associations! In the case of Mirfisto, this was ‘Marum Bibio,’ founded out of dissatisfaction with high beer prices. At a certain point, the IB-Groep (now DUO) introduced the performance-based grant system, which increased pressure on students and led to mergers. Thus, Cineadus, Mirfisto, and Mort Subite (an independent association) merged into ‘Aqua ad Vinum,’ with Marum Bibio joining as a sub-association. When Marum Bibio became a sub-association of Aqua ad Vinum, a lot changed. Due to differing visions between the boards of Marum Bibio and Aqua ad Vinum regarding parties and events, Marum Bibio decided to organize these independently under its own name. This proved so successful that in no time, the Marum Bibio sub-association had more members than its parent association, Aqua ad Vinum. Even the Marum Bibio introduction camp turned out to be highly successful. While other student associations struggled to attract a handful of participants, Marum Bibio consistently had over 100 attendees. This situation was unsustainable, so in April 2005, the Marum Bibio sub-association transformed into the Marum Bibio student association. From then on, things moved quickly: Marum Bibio continued to grow while the parent association declined. Marum Bibio’s parties and activities kept expanding, such as hosting a jacuzzi during the Beach Party at their regular pub, offering Duvel beer at bargain prices during the Duvel Party, organizing an annual cantus where plenty of drinking and singing happens, and the highlight: the Sunset Cruise—a gala event aboard an actual cruise ship, unique in the Netherlands. In recent years, Marum Bibio has continued to thrive. They established their own club, “De Fles,” where up to 40 members gather every evening for a chat, a drink, or the occasional party. Over the years, their club has had various locations. In 2020, during their 15th anniversary, they moved along with their regular pub, resulting in Marum Bibio becoming the only Dutch student association housed in a former strip club. In short, Marum Bibio has never stood still and doesn’t plan to anytime soon!
